Daily Life And Protection In Constantinople
Looking for a safe new place to live? Then Constantinople, also known as New Rome, is the perfect place. There are over 4,000 houses, and everyone is welcome and sure to have a home. It's also very well protected, being a peninsula. A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. Since Constantinople is a peninsula, it never gets attacked. And in the rare times that it does get attacked on the side connected to land, there are three different walls blocking the entrance. They are each 40 feet tall and 15 feet thick. There are also chains spanned across the harbor that when pulled, closes the gates and sink invaders' ships. Besides all that, there is also a big army that protects the city in case invaders manage to get inside, and watchtowers throughout the city where military keep an eye out for attacks. So based on all that, I can ensure you that Constantinople is a very safe place to live.

Emperor Justinian, Theodora, And The Justinian Code Of Law
Constantinople is ruled by the wondrous emperor, Justinian. He and his wife, the empress Theodora, has improved life and equality. The empress Theodora, a former actor, influences Justinian a lot. In AD 532, she helped save Justinian's throne and convinced him to pass laws for women rights. Thanks to the law, now women have the right to own land. And if she becomes a widow, income from the land would help her take care of her children. Justinian also invented his own laws. He decided that the laws at that time were too unfair, scattered and disorganized, so he ordered a group of scholars to reform the law code. The fairer and simplified end result is now known as the Justinian Code. These laws apply and are fair to all.

Religion And The Hagia Sophia
There are many types of religions in Constantinople, including Armenians, Jews, and Muslims. But although many people with different religions live in Constantinople, the official religion is Christianity. People with different religious beliefs are given homes to stay in at Constantinople, but they live in ghettos, low income neighborhoods, away from the people that believe in Christianity. For religious purposes, Justinian built 25 cathedrals. The most magnificent one is the Hagia Sophia, which means "Holy Wisdom." Completed in AD 537, the Hagia Sophia is 12 stories tall, and 107 feet wide. The cathedral looks very plain on the outside, but is extremely beautiful on the inside. On the inside, it's decorated with grand mosaics and white marble. The purpose of this is contrast. The outside represents the daily world, and the inside represents the spiritual world.
